Aluminum sulfate acidifies the soil because of the sulfate, not the aluminum. Actually, its possible aluminum, being Al+++, could take the place of 3 hydrogen ions (H+), though more likely is it would take the place of a Ca++ and 1 H+. Anyway, its the sulfate which causes acidity. SO4 + 2 H2O = 2 H2SO4 + O2. Sulfate + water = sulfuric acid + oxygen

I have used calcium sulfate aka, gypsum / dry wall. I could get broken wall dry wall for free in pick-up truck quantities ( for a 1500 sq ft garden) . There is a little nuisance with the paper surfaces. It is not as satisfying as the pouring conc. sulfuric on the garden , but that is not for everyone.

If planting a vegetable garden, you'd probably be better off using raised beds where you can more easily control pH and if planting a landscape, you'd be better off following the adage 'right plant, right place' and planting only plants that like higher pH soil.

All have an acidifying affect but ammonium sulfate is strongest. Of course there are many other components in your soul which will often have an effect.

2020年2月16日 · I would add the sulfur as gypsum/calcium sulfate . Then there is no time delay while the sulfur flowers ( powder) slowly oxidize to sulfite or sulfate when they will become water soluble. Gypsum is lower cost and more available and has limited solubility so will act slowly. I would just water in gypsum as that takes the least work.

2011年8月19日 · Note that aluminum sulfate is generally not recommended for lowering soil pH because high rates can injure most plants. Hydrangeas are the exception. Mix about 1 lb (2 cups) of aluminum sulfate per 5 gallons of water and then apply the solution around the drip line of the plant. Apply enough of the solution per plant to just saturate the soil.
