Amfleet’s design is based on Budd’s earlier Metroliner electric multiple unit. Initially, Amtrak ordered 57 cars in 1973 to supplement the Metroliners on the Northeast Corridor.

Amfleet II cars are assigned to medium- and long-distance trains in the eastern United States, including the Adirondack, Cardinal, Carolinian, Crescent, Lake Shore Limited, Maple Leaf, Palmetto, and Silver Meteor/Silver Star. When first delivered, they were assigned primarily to the Auto Train, Cardinal, and Silver Service routes.
