Having done a "Grand Tour" of Europe, he chose to rebuild the old house at Amisfield in the Palladian style. He commissioned the English architect Isaac Ware to design the house, due to his skill in the Palladian style. It faced north onto the River Tyne but had a formal south frontage facing the garden and broader estate. [4] .

Built in red coloured Garvald freestone, the mansion house had a seven-bayed frontage & ionic portico, & it is a true loss to the people of Haddington & beyond.

Amisfield House was built in in 1755 for Francis Charteris (later 7th Earl of Wemyss) by John Baxter to designs by Isaac Ware and the landscape remodeled to create sweeping parkland.

Isaac Ware's book, A Complete Body of Architecture, had 748 pages and 122 plates. It was intended as a practical manual and covered every aspect of architecture, including the price of materials.

The plates include some of Ware's own designs - rococo interiors of Chesterfield House (demolished in 1937) (pl. 60-61, 81-83, 85, 88); Amisfield House (pl.39, 45), Clifton Hill (pl. 40), Oxford Town Hall (pl.48-9), Wrotham Park (pl. 52-53), Eythrop House (pl. 104-105, 107), and several chimneypieces.

This large garden features identical cylindrical towers on each of the four corners of its walls. Also extant is the 18th century Ice House on the River Tyne; two twin, two-story Gate Lodges; and a Temple (likely designed by Ware) that overlooks the River.
