The SDP40F was the first diesel locomotive built new for Amtrak and for a brief time they formed the backbone of the company's long-distance fleet. A series of derailments in the mid-1970s shattered Amtrak's confidence in the locomotive, and many railroads banned it from their tracks.

2025年2月26日 · Today, just one is preserved, former Amtrak #644 located in Boulder City, Nevada at the Nevada Southern Railroad Museum. This SDF40-2 carries a Burlington Northern Santa Fe number (6976) and wears the remains of a "Maersk Sealand" light blue livery from its time pulling freight nearly two decades ago.

5266, Class 5250, was built in August 1974, #74611-65, FN 74611-65, as Amtrak 644. It was sold to AT&SF 644 in September 1984 and rebuilt at San Bernardino in May 1985 as 5266.

Amtrak 644 has been preserved! moving to Ogden UT! Note the strobe lights on 647. The open bridge in the background led to Grand Central Station. After the closing of that station, the bridge was raised into an open position.
