Amun-Ra was the king of the Upper Egyptian gods and one of the most important gods in Egypt, second only to Osiris. Egyptians gave Amun-Ra the role of a creative power responsible for all life on earth, in heaven and in the Tuat (underworld). Amun was also the father of the pharaoh.

In Thebes, Amun as father, Mut as mother, and the Moon god Khonsu as their son formed the divine family or the "Theban Triad". The history of Amun as the patron god of Thebes begins in the 20th century BC, with the construction of the Precinct of Amun-Ra at Karnak under Senusret I.

Many pharaohs took on the title of “son of Amun-Ra” as a sign of their divine mandate to rule. The influence of the cult of Amun-Ra reached its peak during the New Kingdom period, when Egypt was at the height of its power and prosperity.

2025年1月4日 · The triad in Thebes was Amun, his wife, and their son Khonsu, the moon god. (Mut was originally an eagle goddess of Thebes who replaced Amun's first wife, Amunet, after Amun came to power.) Amun's sacred animal was originally the goose and, like the god Geb, was sometimes known as the “Great Bull.”

Fifth Dynasty and subsequent pharaohs were all known as “The son of Ra” and Ra became incorporated into every pharaoh’s name from then onward. During the Middle Kingdom, the new deity, Amun-Ra was formed. Amun was one of the gods who formed the Ogdoad (the assembly of eight gods who represented eight elements of creation).

Having become more important than Montu, the local war deity of Thebes, Menthu's authority became said to exist because he was the son of Amun. However, as Mut was infertile, it was believed that she, and thus Amun, had adopted Menthu instead.

Amun and Mut had one child, the moon god Khonsu. He was promoted to national god by Ahmose I, the first pharaoh of the New Kingdom because the king believed that Amun had helped him drive the Hyksos from Egypt. He was also adopted into the Ennead of Heliopolis when he merged with the ancient sun god to become Amun-Ra.
