Classic Amy had a very different design, although she was still pink, she wore different clothes, has different quills (very important) and is 8. She only showed up in Sonic CD and the comics, pretty much being reduced to a minor character.

Seeing as though they treat quills as hair it's safe to assume it was to do with her desire to wear short quills displayed by a new short bob cut style. I wanted her to look more like a hedgehog than her modern design does, but I didn't want to get rid of the general round shape and uniqueness of her quills; I didn't want to just go back to her classic design since it just shares the same quills as Sonic.
