For me the main advantage of iCloud is that you don’t need a cloud service per se to sync all your Apple devices, you can have the same notes, photos, calendar, todo lists, even with non Apple apps. Specialized cloud drive apps offer a much better service as a dedicated filing and backup, not one is offering syncing your apps content.

In the latter case, I think it's fine if the "free" cloud storage lasts for only 1 year from the purchase of the device, just like the warranty.
