May 23, 2023 · I recently bought an Apple 2 E from an yard sale. The system works great however after about 4 days of using it the system seemed to stop reading floppy disks. The drive seemed to work one moment and the next it just starts up and makes noise like the drive is spinning all the time even when there is no disk in the drive.

Once I inserted the 1.44 MB disk into the drive, there was a lot of expected noise as it mounted as a floppy icon (below) on my Desktop.

The type of diskette (HD or DD) and its file system would be of importance. For example, an 800K Mac-formatted DD diskette cannot be read by a USB floppy drive.

A DD floppy in a 720K PC format may work in a USB drive, and a 1.44 MB PC-formatted HD diskette will. A Macintosh SE FDHD model has a 1.44 MB floppy drive, which can handle 800K and 1.44 MB Mac floppies.
