County Londonderry (5 UDR) – The Londonderry Regiment, later known as the Londonderry Light Infantry and (in 1881) briefly as the 4th Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers before being transferred to the Royal Artillery as 9th Brigade, North Irish Division RA.

The Ulster Defence Regiment became operational on 1st April 1970 in response to the demand for additional troops to support the civil powers in Northern Ireland. The Regiment was on continuous operational service for a period of twenty-two years, a distinction held by no other regiment in the history of the British Army.

The UDR’s main tasks were guarding key points, patrolling, surveillance, and manning vehicle check points. As they were recruited from the community where they served, they were never used for crowd control or riot duties.
