I seem to recall this discussion happening previously on the forum - or perhaps it was just in the context of JMicron chips and how some can do double-duty as a 1-to-4 port multiplier.

2023年10月9日 · Yes, the ASM1166 does appear to be a better chip with 6 native SATA ports, (meaning without a SATA Port Multiplier). Using it with only 1 or 2 PCIe lanes will slow the various disk transfers, but HDDs are slow enough it probably won't be a problem. CMR is Conventional Magnetic Recording and SMR is Shingled Magnetic Recording.

2023年3月1日 · Most of the SATA controllers in Amazon are based on ASMedia chips (ASM1166 for example). for 6 port I think PCIe 4x is the right one to provide enough bandwidth. how good and reliable those cards? do you have a recommendation on those cards? Is it worth buying SAS controllers instead? (I saw here mostly LSI is recommended)
