The history of the SA80 family is flawed despite its status today. Back in the Cold War, doctrines were shifting towards assault rifles holding the enemy down, and fire support (tanks, artillery, etc) kicking them in the head. So, in 1985, the L85A1 and L86A1 were both accepted into service, replacing the L1A1 SLR.
