February 5, 2024, Mountain View, CA – The official classification now aligns with what many suspected from merely looking at the images of the strange meteorites that fell near Berlin on January 21, 2024. They belong to a rare group called “aubrites”.

Here we examine the 3D mineralogy and the geochemistry of fourteen aubrites, including mineral major element compositions, bulk-rock compositions, and oxygen isotopic compositions to understand their formation and evolution at extreme ƒO2 conditions.

Aubrites, named after the Aubres, France, fall of 1836, are enstatite achondrites. Most are breccias (Shallowater being a notable exception) containing igneous and impact-melted clasts. Like enstatite chondrites, aubrites have highly reduced mineralogy, but they probably do not come from the same parent asteroid as either EH or EL chondrites.
