One57, formerly known as Carnegie 57, is a 75-story, 1,005 ft (306 m) supertall skyscraper at 157 West 57th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues in the Midtown neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City.

After the Korean War began in 1950, the U.S. Air Force looked for a jet-powered medium bomber to quickly replace the aging, propeller-driven Douglas B-26 Invader. In March 1951 the USAF contracted with Martin to build the British Canberra in the United States under license.

Nicknamed ‘The Billionaire Building,’ One 57 is one of the various sleek residential towers lining 57th Street overlooking Central Park. It was completed in 2014 by Extell Development Company, boasting a design by renowned architect Christian de Portzamparc.

On the night of Friday, December 13th, 1967, I was on duty as Tower Officer at Phan Rang Air Base, Vietnam. My friend of ten years in the Air Force, Major Tom Dugan and navigator Major Jay McGouldrick had a maintenance delay for the night’s 13th and final B-57 mission.
