The North American B-25 Mitchell is an American medium bomber that was introduced in 1941 and named in honor of Brigadier General William "Billy" Mitchell, a pioneer of U.S. military aviation. [2] .

The B-25 was designed by North American Aviation, Inc., and was first flown in 1940. A high-wing monoplane with a twin tail and tricycle landing gear, it was powered by two 1,700-horsepower Wright radial engines and carried a crew of four to six.

The B-25 medium bomber was one of America's most famous airplanes of World War II. It was the type used by Gen. Jimmy Doolittle for the Tokyo Raid on April 18, 1942. Subsequently, B-25s saw duty in every combat area being flown by the Dutch, British, Chinese, Russians and Australians in addition to U.S. forces.

The lone B-25 bomber that survived the mission landed in Russia, and the aircraft was confiscated by the Soviets. In the Pacific War, B-25 Mitchell bombers were frequently used at low altitude, acting as ground attack aircraft instead of as medium bombers.

Many B-25 bombers already had cameras mounted either just aft of the bomb bay, or later under the tail guns. Both of these camera systems were vital to measure the effectiveness of bomb runs.

Eventually, over 100 men and women that built the B-25 bomber had signed the vertical tail and rudder assembly. Every square inch has been covered. The assembly now stands on permanent display at the Wyandotte County Historical Museum.

The tail gunner had to lie flat to fire the tail gun, directing fire through a telescopic sight. Despite the resemblances to the NA-40, the B-25 was clearly a new aircraft.
