The Convair B-58 Hustler was a high-speed strategic bomber, capable of routinely attaining Mach 2 at altitude. It incorporated a large delta wing with a leading-edge sweep of 60°, and was powered by an arrangement of four General Electric J79-GE-1 turbojet engines.

Convair built 116 B-58s: 30 test and pre-production aircraft and 86 for operational service. Hustlers flew in the Strategic Air Command between 1960 and 1970. Setting 19 world speed and altitude records, B-58s also won five different aviation trophies.

However, the Hustler was a gleaming example of advanced Space Age Cold War tech. Fast, sleek, deadly, and terribly unforgiving of inattention, the B-58 was indeed an amazing machine.

On August 1, 1960, the USAF finally formally assumed B-58 operations responsibility and began Category III testing. 59-2436, the first fully-operational Hustler equipped with all tactical systems, was delivered to the 43rd.

The B-58 was a four engine, delta wing bomber, capable of speeds in excess of Mach 2 (twice the speed of sound). It carried a crew of three: pilot, navigator/bombardier, and defensive systems operator, each sitting in tandem in individual escape capsules.

2012年3月17日 · One of the Hustler's most novel features was a large centerline pod mounted beneath the fuselage carrying fuel as well as a nuclear bomb. The idea underlying this concept was that the entire pod would be dropped over the target giving the B-58 a cleaner, more aerodynamic shape to allow the aircraft to escape at higher speeds.
