The Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) M420 is a 2,000 horsepower, four axle road switcher locomotive, purchased by Canadian National, BC Rail, and Providence & Worcester. The locomotive remains in service today on various short-line railroads throughout North America.

Just remember the amount of time, effort (and/or money) just 5-10 years ago it would have taken to be able to hold in one's own hands a relatively super detailed, HO scale replica, (BCOL specific) M420B. These things are neat. And a sorely longed after aspect of 1970-1980s era BC Rail modeler's repertoire.

British Columbia Railway became the second railroad to own the M-420 in 1973 with an order of 16 units. BCOL 640 to 647 were regular M-420s with the standard safety cab while BCOL 681 to 688 were designated M-420B and were cabless booster units.

The MLW M-420 was a diesel-electric locomotive manufactured between 1973 and 1977 in Montreal, Canada by the Montreal Locomotive Works. A total of 88 units were built for Canadian railways, including eight B units built for the British Columbia Railway; most of production went to Canadian National.
