For the 2001 season, the race-capable BMW M3, officially called the BMW M3 GTR, was ready to roll. The team’s trump card was the 4.0-litre V8 high-performance engine with 330 kW (460 hp).

The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW 's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986. The initial model was available in a coupé body style, with a convertible body style made available soon after.

Based on the engine of the BMW M3, the engine used for the M3 GTS was revised, and the displacement of this eight-cylinder engine with high-rev concept increased from 4.0 to 4.4 litres. Therefore, the M3 GTS with 331 kW/450 hp and an impressive 8,300 rpm delivers exactly 30 hp more than the standard model.
