Stalled M-SUPMIN with this neat BN paint... My First encounter of a BN ( BNSF ) engine with the name spelled out. Crossing the stone fill on the eastern shore of Richard B Russell Lake. A somewhat of a rare site, at least here in Hamlet, sits a white faced BNSF SD40-2.

BNSF 7812 is a unique creature among the hordes of "Green Dragons" still running around the mainline today. 7812 is one of the few BN units to wear the orange and black Tiger Stripe on the nose. It no longer has it's stripes, but is still a white face BN unit with the large BN logo and "BURLINGTON NORTHERN" lettering down the long hood.

I believe 7812 was one of three or four units involved in a track washout and roll over on the MRL a mile or so east of Heron, MT. One of the other units was a GP50 with the tiger stripe scheme that had been whitefaced but retained the larger lettering on the long hood. There was also a GP40 involved and perhaps a fourth unit.

I know that the 8002 once wore the "tiger paws" paint scheme similar to the BN GP50's but I don't know why the 7812 was painted this way. Looks like

BN 7812 was repainted due to damage after the unit went over the edge in a washout at Heron, MT. There were three units involved I believe and one of them may have been a GP50 which was also repainted. The 7812 was just repainted to match. There were no 'lettering sets' involved here.

BN SD40-2 7812 built June 1977 as C&S 942, then C&S 7812, became BNSF 7812, retired Nov. 2008, and seen in Galesburg, IL May 28, 1989. Larry Anglund photo 9.

In August 1979 it was renumbered 7812, Class SD40-2. In January 1982 it became BN 7812, Class SD40-2, and it later became BNSF 7812, Class SD40-2, in January 24, 2003. It was retired on June 30, 2009.

Brandon: No, BN 8002, which was the first unit painted in the Tiger Stripe paint scheme, also had the BN logo & name spelled out on the long hood. BN 7812 was, however, the last unit to be painted into BN paint, and was completed just a few months before the official formal merging of BN & ATSF took place.
