BN 7149 and 7890 were classied as DF40-2s, DF standing for Dual Fuel. They were equipped to run off of diesel or liquified natural gas fuel. Here is a picture I shot of BNSF 7890 when it was at Watson, California some time back. It is currently LUGO in Temple, TX. BNSF 7890 was repainted March 31, 1999.

This unit was originally SD40-2 #7890. With the cost of fuel going up and the relative cheap and plentiful supply of Natural Gas, BN wanted to investigate the use of it as an alternative to diesel fuel. A second unit #7149 was converted in August of 1992. There was a fuel tender that carried the LNG fuel for the locomotive.
BN 7890 well before and after it's LNG days....
Who knew it would be something special with it's conversion to Natural Gas around 10 years later? Little did anyone know that after its stint in the LNG colors that the 7890 would later be painted in new colors for a new merged railroad as seen here by BNSF 7890 at Providence Hill in 1999, still sporting it's flared radiators from earlier days.

BNSF 7890 the X-BN Natural Gas Locomotive leads a stack train out of La Crosse. Title: A rare SD40-2 Description: A very rare type of SD40-2 sits in the storage lines at Northtowns T yard. I believe this unit involved in a wreck and got SD45 flares, or was one a a few SD40-2s that were tested to run on natural gas.

Converted back to straigt diesel, but still with the flared radiators and since painted Heritage 1. I just posted a photo of it at bnsfpix.com. Taken 3/1/03 in Tacoma WA. What ever happened to BN 7890, the natural gas burning unit? Sold, scrapped, stored? Kind of curious, it had a nice paint scheme. Any photos of it out there? Thanks, Chuck L.
