Burlington Northern BN-1 - Illinois Railway Museum
Burlington Northern BN1 is a modernized diesel locomotive known as a “cab unit.” It was built as an F9A mixed-traffic engine for the Northern Pacific Railroad, which used it to pull both passenger and freight trains. It was switched to pure freight duty in the early 1970s and was later rebuilt as a power unit for a rotary snow plow.

F Units - Trained Eye Northwest
Passenger F3s and F7s were in the 9700s, the passenger F9s were in the 9800s. This seamed pretty straight forward in the beginning, but it didn’t take long for things to unravel. Right after the merger in March, BN started trading in the older F units for SD45s. This opened up a bunch of number vacancies. Then in 1971, Amtrak was born.

BN F9A 826 was built by EMD in October of 1954 as the NP 7006D being part of a four unit A-B-B-A set and assigned to the Rocky Mountain Division at Livingston, MT. While I did see a number of NP F9A's at Easton and Auburn, WA before the BN merger the 7006D was not one of them.
