Electro-Motive GP40M Diesels 3002, Class GP40M, was built in February 1968, #33745, FN 7057-5, as Chicago Burlington & Quincy 624. It became Burlington Northern 3024, Class GP-40, in 1970 and rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen as 3503, Class GP-40M , on November 16, 1988.

BN 3015 and 3017 are straight GP40's, both ex-CB&Q. The 3000-series ex-CBQ GP40's were rebuilt, called GP40M's, and numbered in the 3500 series. Some were renumbered into the BNSF 3000's.

Ten years later BN had a number of their GP40's rebuilt, including the 3006 which emerged as GP40M 3500 in October of 1988. (The M stands for MK where it was rebuilt). Here is the 3500 on an eastbound BN freight at Avon, MT on the MRL 9-17-93.
