BN had a fleet of 5 GP9B's that were rebuilt from 4 ex-NP GP9's and 1 ex-GN GP9. The 603 rebuilt from BN 1940 (NP 361) was probably the most elusive as it was in service less than 2 years before being retired.

The EMD GP9 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between 1954 and 1959. The GP9 succeeded the GP7 as the second model of EMD's General Purpose (GP) line, [1] incorporating a new sixteen- cylinder engine which generated 1,750 horsepower (1.30 MW). [2] .

Over the years I photographed three of BN's GP9B's which I thought were interesting locomotives. I saw two in Montana on the ex-NP and the other at Northtown. BN 1894, 1908, 1911 and 1940 were rebuilt to GP9B 600-603 in 1982. Also in the 1980's a number were sold to short lines including MRL while others went into a rebuilding program emerging as BN GP28's during 1992/1993.

You're right, this is a rare bird for Denver. Two are working at Lincoln, NE, BNSF 1701 and 1703. BNSF 1702 was sold to Wright Cooperative at Dodge City, KS. It still wears BNSF scheme. BNSF 1700 was built in July 1956 as Northern Pacific 267 then BN 1890. When wrecked it became cabless GP9B BN 600:2.
