The GE U36 is a 3600 hp diesel-electric locomotive model built by General Electric Transportation Systems. These were the largest and most powerful of the conventional GE U-boats, and were meant to be a direct rival with EMD's SD45 and F45 diesel locomotives, and American Locomotive Work's C636.

The Milwaukee bought 4 U33C's and then 4 U36C's. The ATSF bought 25 U33C's and then changed to U36C's for a total of 100. The BN bought their last U33C's in 1971 but then went for the U30C as they bought 6 axle GE's for coal trains and didn't need the higher horsepower.
