Six stored BNSF units at BNSF's Temple Yd. On its way to a museum near you.

One continues in service and another – 5704 (renumbered to BNSF 6484) – was retired in 2008 and bound for scrap in 2020 after four decades and millions of miles of service. That’s when Eric Goodman, manager, Economic Development for BNSF, first heard of 5704’s destiny.

By 2021, 5704 (renumbered to BNSF 6484) was the last remaining intact former Santa Fe bicentennial locomotive. BNSF authorized its donation to the SCRM with the latter’s goal of restoring it to bicentennial splendor.

It was rebuilt at San Bernardino in August 1986 as 5833, Class 5800, and became BNSF 6483, Class SD45-2, on February 1, 1998. It was sold as NREX 6483 in 2003 and resold to Progress Rail Services as PRLX 6483 in 2009. 6484, Class SD45-2, was built in May 1973, #72642-18, FN 72642-18, as AT&SF 5704, Class 5625.

BNSF 6484 Parked in the Temple dead line for the last several years, this unit is highly unlikely to return to active duty. Pity.
