I read that for those trains whose route includes trackage rights on UP, they add an extra locomotive so that if one breaks down in foreign territory, they can keep on running at full speed.

We get a WB ZCHCPTL1 and 2 on uneven schedules due to distance, weather, track maintenance and dispatching issues. The ZCHCPTL2 is due on the ramp by 0930 to 'make service' (BNSF/UPS term) and #1 is due by 1830, I think. We also get ZSPOPTL's (Spokane sections) a couple of times a week.
