It was originally classified as the 4800 Class when introduced in 1932, and renumbered in 1946. Although credited to Charles Collett, the design dated back to 1868 with the introduction of the George Armstrong 517 class.

Originally numbered in the 4800-4874 series the locomotives were renumbered to 1400-1474 in 1946 to allow for 2-8-0 locomotives fitted for oil burning to be accommodated.

They were originally known as the 4800 class but were renumbered in 1946 to make way for the 2800 class to be renumbered in the 4800 series as they were converted to oil-burning. The 1400 class was motor fitted for working push-pull trains which is the only difference between this class and the 5800 class.
