Compared to its predecessor the P160 featured a lower monocoque, sharper lines and revised suspension geometry. Tweaked once again by engineer Aubrey Woods, the V12 could now safely rev to 10,800 rpm. Cooling was also improved.

The first P160 built, chassis 01 served the BRM works team for three seasons. It was used in the first half of 1971 by Pedro Rodriguez and for the remainder of the year by Peter Gethin.
