The BTR-60 is the first vehicle in a series of Soviet eight-wheeled armoured personnel carriers (APCs). It was developed in the late 1950s as a replacement for the BTR-152 and was seen in public for the first time in 1961. BTR stands for bronetransportyor (Russian: бронетранспортёр, БТР, lit. 'armoured carrier'). [8]

A central tyre-pressure regulation system, fitted as standard on all BTR-60 series APCs, enables the driver to adjust the tyre pressure to suit the ground being crossed. The BTR-60P is fully amphibious and is propelled in the water by a single water-jet mounted at the rear of the hull.

Although Ob'yekt 1015B had the best results, GAZ was chosen because of their experience in this matter and industrial capabilities, to produce the BTR-60P, which was also simpler and low-tech, better suited for mass-production. The BTR-60P had a capacity for 16 soldiers but was open-top, unarmed and lightly armored.

The BTR-60R-975 is similar, but for use by Tactical Air Control Parties (TACPs); the difference is primarily in the radios carried. The top of the vehicle has a collapsible AZI frame antenna and an extendible 10-meter radio mast.
