BTX (chemistry) - Wikipedia
In the petroleum refining and petrochemical industries, the initialism BTX refers to mixtures of benzene, toluene, and the three xylene isomers, all of which are aromatic hydrocarbons. The xylene isomers are distinguished by the designations ortho- (or o -), meta - (or m -), and para - (or p -) as indicated in the adjacent diagram.
The Aromatics Fractionation Unit is used by refineries to separate a mixture of aromatics into pure benzene, toluene, and mixed xylenes products. It is also commonly called a BTX (benzene-toluene-xylene) Unit. The product streams are then either processed by a chemical unit within the refinery or sold to a nearby chemical plant.
Energy requirements for BTX shown in Table 4-3 are based on production from naphtha (a petroleum fraction) and mixtures of propane and butane; the feedstock energy data in Table 4-4 is based on production of benzene directly from toluene.
BTX Filtration | Aromatic Fractionation | Jonell Systems
Aromatic fractionation or BTX filtration involves removing contaminants from extraction solvents like sulfolane. Aromatic Fractionation is when a refinery utilizes reformate from the catalytic reformer and extracts the aromatics rather than blend them into gasoline.

Catalysts to produce the important petrochemicals like benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) from refinery feedstocks, like light cycle oil (LCO) are reviewed here by covering published papers using model mixtures and real feeds. Model compounds experiments like tetralin and naphthalene derivatives provided a 53–55% total BTX yield.
One of largest applications of liquid – liquid extraction has been developed to recover benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) as feedstock for chemical manufacturing (Figure 5).
GT-BTX®: Aromatics Recovery | Sulzer
GT-BTX® is an aromatics recovery technology that uses extractive distillation to remove benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) from refinery, petrochemical or coke oven aromatics streams such as catalytic reformate, pyrolysis gasoline or coke oven light oil (COLO).
