Ballysteen was once known as Iverus, from the original celtic tribe of Uibh Rossa who lived there. The most prominent landmark in Ballysteen is Beagh Castle, which stands on the banks of the river Shannon. It is reputed to have been built by the Fitzgealds as an outpost fortification in the thirteenth century.

Ballysteen, Baile Stiabhna, the Town of Stiabhna, lies approximately 28 km west of Limerick City, and 7 km north of Askeaton. The Dundons had a castle at Ballysteen. Nothing remains of this castle. Records for Dundon ownership of this castle begin in 1570. Thomas, and his uncle Thomas Óg, are described as gents and freeholders of Ballisteyn.
