2018年7月10日 · A mute in the bell of a brass instrument can quiet it down to literally a whisper because all the sound of the instrument has to go through (and is affected by) the mute. On the Bassoon, only the very lowest notes are forced to travel the full length of the instrument to be affected by the mute.

The bassoon mute is useful for playing quietly at the bottom of the instrument as it removes some of the brightness of the tone and gives a little extra resistance. You can still play bottom Bb. Bottom B is much easier to play and I always use it for the end of the 1st movement of Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony.

Use a bassoon mute for the softest passages (See below). See PDF, Seven B’s for Three ppp’s. The mute on the left is a perforated, cone shaped leather bell mute purchased on the internet. You can also make a similar mute out of heavy felt. The middle mute is called a puff ball made from pillow stuffing. The mute on the right is a painter’s sponge.
