BDEM is a massively-parallel discrete-element method (DEM) solver capable of simulating a wide array of granular flow problems. It has been extensively used for biomass material, hence the B in the name. BDEM is implemented using the AMReX framework and can support parallel particle data structures on hybrid CPU/GPU HPC architectures.

BDEM is used to simulate settling of corn-stover particles (as glued-spheres) in a 2.4 m tall, 2 m diameter conical hopper with 50 mm exit and 32 inclination angle. A component sphere radius of 1 mm is used, yielding a total of 7 M clustered particles (38 M component spheres). Simulations were performed on Eagle CPUs using 1152 MPI ranks.
