I must have climbed in/out of that bed a dozen times or more while installing the cover and with my age and short stature, that would have been difficult without the step. So if you have any inkling of adding a bed step, install it first!

That point is one that should be considered, actually, as a decent ratchet strap could probably cause damage to the BED, where as the old plastic adjustable slider would fail before that occured.
