Jim Bede designed the BD-4, the first real “kitplane” in the world. The design was based on a high-wing cantilever monoplane of conventional design, able to be fitted either with tailwheel or tricycle undercarriage, as the builder chooses.

Brian Ingraham taking the factory BD-4C out for a flight in South Florida. Take a look at the performance, heck of a climb out... The BD-4 is definitely a performer... going up AND coming back down! It was hard to see but I was still indicating 150 knots up to about 2 miles out, then started slowing down.
