Bencubbin is a town in Western Australia in the north eastern Wheatbelt, 275 km north-east of Perth. The town lies within the Shire of Mount Marshall and is home to approximately 294 people as of 2011. [2]

The area was initially opened up by sheep grazing and sandalwooders. The area was mainly opened for agricultural selection in 1910. The townsite of Bencubbin was gazetted in 1917.

Bencubbin is a typical rural town in the north-eastern sector of Western Australia's wheatbelt. It is a simple rural service centre focussed on the surrounding grain and cereal producers. The main attractions in the area are the rocks which rise from the flat wheatfields.

Many of its rock fragments are similar to chondrite meteorites, unlike the mostly igneous material that is found in mesosiderites. Bencubbin is another of the seemingly endless varieties of rock mixtures produced by impacts on asteroids.

Bencubbin is a breccia (a rock formed of angular fragments cemented by a finer material) enclosing clasts of material from other chondritic groups, and the meteorite remains the subject of extensive ongoing research.

Bencubbin is on the border of wheat and station country. This contributes to the wonderful variety of beautiful wildflowers and bird life found throughout the shire. Birds are numerous all year round, and the stunning wildflower season lasts from June until October.

Introduction: Bencubbin (found in Australia, 1930) and Weatherford (found in Oklahoma, 1926) are primitive metal-rich chondrite breccias. Recently, two metal-rich meteorites with similarities to Bencubbin and Weatherford have been found.
