Bewcastle is a large civil parish in the Cumberland unitary authority area of Cumbria, England. It is in the historic county of Cumberland. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 411, reducing to 391 at the 2011 Census. [1] The parish is large and includes the settlements of Roadhead and Sleetbeck.

Bewcastle is an isolated village steeped in Roman and Border history. The church, farm, and castle occupy the site of a Roman out post fort which guarded the Maiden Way, the main Roman road north from Birdoswald on Hadrian’s Wall some 10km (6 miles) to the south.

Bewcastle Castle is a ruined castle in the parish of Bewcastle in the English county of Cumbria, a few miles from the Scottish border. The first castle was built on the site of Bewcastle Roman Fort, around 1092. The castle is surrounded by a dry moat, the north and east sections of which re-use the Roman ditch.

The name of Bewcastle (i.e., Beuth's Castle) reminds us of the noble Saxon who owned the broad acres amidst which it stands, and who had here his residence; and another of the same family, Gill, possessed the adjoining barony, from whom it was named Gill's Land (Gilsland).
