The Bhimbetka rock shelters are an archaeological site in central India that spans the Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods, as well as the historic period. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It exhibits the earliest traces of human life in India and evidence of the Stone Age starting at the site in Acheulian times.

Widely acknowledged to be the earliest evidence of art in South Asia, the Bhimbetka cave paintings are Prehistoric paintings found on the Bhimbetka rock shelters in the Raisen district of present-day Madhya Pradesh.

With evidence of human settlement dating back over 100,000 years, the site provides a glimpse into the evolution of human culture from hunter-gatherers to agriculture.

The cave also has a small inscription of the Maurya/Sunga period. Within the general area of Bhimbetka Group of rock shelters small stupas have been found at Bhimbetka, near Bhoranwali, at Bineka, at Lakhajuar and midway between Lakhajuar and Bhimbetka.
