According to the Tanakh, Uzzah or Uzza (Hebrew: עזה ‎ or עזא ‎), meaning "Strength", was an Israelite whose death is associated with touching the Ark of the Covenant. The account of Uzzah appears in two places in scripture: 2 Samuel 6:3-8 [ 1 ] and 1 Chronicles 13:7-11.

Uzzah is a biblical figure known for his involvement in the transportation of the Ark of the Covenant during the reign of King David. His account is primarily found in 2 Samuel 6:1-11 and 1 Chronicles 13:1-14. Uzzah was the son of Abinadab, in whose house the Ark had been kept for many years after being returned by the Philistines (1 Samuel 7:1).

The location of Uzzah's death, beside the Ark, serves as a poignant reminder of the need for holiness and reverence in approaching God. One of the sons of Abinadab, in whose house at Kirjath-jearim the ark rested for twenty years. In 2 Samuel (6, 3 in the A.V.; and in verses 6,7,8 in the Heb, also) he is invariably called "Uzzah;" but in 1 Chronicles (1Ch 13:7, 9, 11) as invariably "Uzza."

Uzzah reached out to steady the Ark and was fatally smitten. His death was attributed to the violation of the sacred character of the Ark (2 Sam 6:7; 1 Chron 13:10). David was greatly distressed at the incident, and immediately cancelled his plans to enshrine the Ark in Jerusalem. Instead, he deposited it in the home of Obed-edom.
