Welcome to the Bureau of Indian Education’s website. It is a privilege to serve as Director of the BIE and an honor to serve our students and staff. The BIE employs thousands of teachers, administrators, and support personnel across the United States. Our work together requires collaboration, dedication, and teamwork.

There are 183 Bureau-funded elementary and secondary schools and residential facilities. Of these, 55 are BIE-Operated and 128 are Tribally Controlled. The BIE also directly operates two postsecondary institutions: Haskell Indian Nations University (HINU) and the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI).

Provide all BIE Staff timely and accurate advice, assistance, and encouragement. Seek and promote professional development at all levels, to enhance employee performance; and be creative in the use and development of resources. The Human Resources Office for the Bureau of Indian Education is a challenging and dynamic place to work.

$26.1 million enables BIE to provide preschool opportunities at BIE-funded schools. Facilities Operations and Maintenance is $160 million, a $5.6 million increase over the 2023 enacted amount, and includes investments to keep pace with operational cost increases and support the timely maintenance and replacement of equipment at BIE schools.

For BIE students, the implementation of college and career-ready standards in multiple content areas sets a foundation for even greater student success and growth. These standards establish grade-by-grade learning expectations for students in grades K-12.
