Bigeminy comes for the latin for ‘twins’. On an ECG strip, it presents as a sinus beat with a premature ventricular complex immediately following. This extra beat is wide and abnormal as it bypasses the normal conduction system(His-Purkinje) and directly activates the ventricles.

2022年11月10日 · Premature ventricular contraction bigeminy are extra, abnormal heartbeats originating in the Purkinje fibers of the ventricles. The PVC occurs with every other heart beat. Patients may feel a PVC as a skipped beat or palpitation. Single beat premature ventricular contractions are very common and can often be asymptomatic in healthy patients.

These are caused by the premature discharge of a ventricular ectopic focus which produces an early and broad QRS complex. Extrasystoles are usually normal, being common in middle age. The patient may feel an occasional missed beat. Patients with no ischaemic heart disease or cardiomyopathy have an excellent prognosis.
