The Atlas Maior is the final version of Joan Blaeu 's atlas, published in Amsterdam between 1662 and 1672, in Latin (11 volumes), French (12 volumes), Dutch (9 volumes), German (10 volumes) and Spanish (10 volumes), containing 594 maps and around 3,000 pages of text. [1]

The Blaeu Atlas Maior or Cosmographia Blaviana is one of the largest and most splendid of the multi-volume Dutch world atlases. Published in 1662-5, its 594 maps and 3,368 pages of texts collectively presented the state of geographic knowledge of the world in the mid 17th century.

The book commonly known as Blaeu Atlas of Scotland, the fifth volume of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Sive Atlas Novus, is the first known atlas of Scotland and Ireland. [1] . It was compiled by Joan Blaeu, and contains 49 engraved maps and 154 pages of descriptive text written in Latin; it was first published in 1654. [1] .

Utrecht University Library houses two beautiful editions in the Dutch language of the Atlas maior. In Blaeu's time Amsterdam developed into the centre of international trade, overseas expansion and wealth.

In 1654, Blaeu published the first atlas of Scotland, devised by Timothy Pont. Blaeu was fiercely competitive with his contemporary Johannes Janssonius as to which of them could make an atlas with a higher quantity of maps. In 1662, Blaeu published the Atlas Maior, it had 11 volumes and included 600 maps.
