Boehm made his first flute, a four-key flute, in 1810. His Munich flute workshop was established in 1828. The simple system flutes he produced then were light and agile, had small holes, and had easy and bright high notes (rather like French flutes of the time had). He wrote virtuosic music for, and performed it on, these flutes.

Theobald Böhm (or Boehm) (9 April 1794 – 25 November 1881) was a German inventor and musician, who greatly improved the modern Western concert flute and its fingering system (now known as the "Boehm system").

The true breakthrough in flute-making didn't happen until after the Classical period, thanks to Theobald Böhm (1794-1881). This flutist and instrument maker gave the flute its present-day form (back to cylindrical).
