Airplanes with HUD can takeoff in visibility conditions as low as 300 feet (91 meters). HUD can eliminate flight cancellations, diversions and delays caused by restricted visibility. It also provides an extra margin of safety by allowing a pilot to keep his or her eye "on the road," rather than looking down at the instrument panels.

The HGS comprises of an overhead unit which contains the CRT and projector; a combiner, also known as the Head Up Display (HUD), which combines the projected display with the outside view; a control panel for data entry and to select mode of operation and an annunciator panel on the F/Os instrument panel.

2013年3月5日 · HUDs are standard now on the Boeing 787 and I’ll bet there’s less grumbling from F/O’s for one good reason: now there’s a HUD on their side as well in the 787. On the 737-800, the HUD is only on the captain’s side. I’ll admit that I had my doubts too when I first started the transition from MD-80 captain to 737 captain.
