Students write and illustrate stories about their lives and their dreams. The EJK Award celebrates outstanding picture book illustrators and writers early in their careers. It is given annually by the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation in partnership with the de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM).

Created in 1986, the EJK Award extends the legacy of Ezra Jack Keats, the author and illustrator of The Snowy Day, and over 20 beloved books that helped break the color barrier in mainstream children's book publishing.
