The commercial future of the Boran: Cross-breeding
This is not with the aim of creating a new composite breed, but rather a continuous cross-breeding programme that enables one to take advantage of the hybrid vigour resulting from the use of pure bred Boran and Angus bulls, which are so far apart genetically.
Crossbreeding - Brahman
Crossbreeding to improve progeny growth rate using superior indigenous breeds as dams and exotic B. Taurus or controlled breeding is feasible. Sanga and B. Indicus (eg Brahman and Boran) crosses should be evaluated in stressful environments. A need to study adaptive traits.
Cross Breeding with Boran
The results of the Beef Genomics Program (BGP) which showed that the Boran breed is genetically far removed from the other breeds in South Africa is strong evidence to support the use Boran bulls to maximise beef production in commercial cross-bred cattle. The impressive results Vastrap Boran has achieved using the Boran in its commercial…

programmes with Brahman, Simmentalers, Sussex, Charolais, Nguni, Bonsmara and San-ta Gertrudis to name but a few. Studies done in Australia (1996) and the USA (1995) have shown that Boran bulls on F1 cross - es resulted in – • the highest percentage of calves born • the lowest mortality to weaning • the highest weaning weight in ...
Evaluation of F1 cows sired by Brahman, Boran, and Tuli bulls for ...
This study evaluated reproductive, maternal performance, and longevity traits of 143 F 1 cows sired by Brahman (Br), Boran (Bo), or Tuli (T) bulls from Angus or Hereford cows from 1994 to 2011. Cow traits were measured at 7 yr of age in 1999 and 2000 for 1992- …

Progeny of Brahman sires were heaviest at birth (45.7 kg), followed by offspring from British breed, Boran, and Belgian Blue sires (average of 42.4 kg). The lightest offspring at birth were from Tuli sires (38.6 kg).
2011年1月5日 · Hereford (P = 0.03), Brahman (P < 0.001), Boran (P = 0.03), and Tuli (P < 0.001) sires, but did not differ from Belgian Blue-sired (P = 0.13) cows. Brahman-sired cows took longer to mature than Boran- (P = 0.03) or Belgian Blue-sired cows (P = 0.003). Belgian Blue-sired cows were faster maturing than Tuli-sired cows (P = 0.02). Brahman-sired ...
Cross Breeding - The Boran Cattle Breeder’s Society – Kenya
Crossing the Boran with a dual-purpose breed such as Red Poll and Brown Swiss gives the option of breeding females for dairying and steers for fattening. Such crosses exhibit maximum hybrid vigour. Model calculations carried out on field data collected on Kenyan ranches suggest the optimum crossbreeding system to be a two-way cross.

F1 Brahman/Charolais crossed to Boran: 40pc above pure breeds - 35kg per 100kg cow. These figures showed optimum results coming from the F1 joined to a third breed. The Boran provides the third unrelated breed for the F1 Brahman cross cow to continue to produce a superior calf.
