Boston supported the invasion of Saipan between 11 and 24 June. She also took part in several raids on the Bonin Islands in June and July and supported the carrier task forces during the Battle of the Philippine Sea on 19 June. 2023年7月26日 · They were converted between 1952 and 1955-56 with two RIM-2 terrier SAM launchers aft, full radar modernization, and keeping their forward artillery, which came in handy during their tours of duty in Vietnam, where they gained extra battle stars. By the end of 1953, TERRIER Missiles were ready for sea tests from the experimental ship USS NORTON SOUND and the battleship USS MISSISSIPPI. In November 1955, the USS BOSTON was recommis sioned as CAG-l and, carrying TERRIER Missiles, became the first guided missile ship in the world.

Armed with two TERRIER batteries, USS BOSTON is identified as the first operational guided missile ship although USS MISSISSIPPI (battleship) and USS GYATT (destroyer) were out fitted as prototype systems in 1952 and 1954, respectively.

The United States Navy's Boston class were the first guided missile cruisers in the world. Both ships in this experimental class were originally Baltimore-class heavy cruisers that had been decommissioned after World War II, but were redesignated as guided missile heavy cruisers (CAGs) and entered refit in 1952.

Thus, the Terrier Missile System came into being. The Terrier Program proceeded rapidly. In November 1955, the USS Boston (CAG 1) was recommissioned (Fig. 4), and, carrying Terrier Missiles, became the firstguided- missile ship in the world. The event marked the culmi-nation of the first phase of the Terrier Program.
