The branches of the cervical plexus emerge from the posterior triangle at the nerve point, a point which lies midway on the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid.

The deep branches of the cervical plexus supply most of the muscles in the neck, anterior to the vertebral column. Branches pass directly from the ventral rami of C1 to C4 to the prevertebral muscles (rectus capitis anterior, rectus capitis lateralis, longus capitis and longus colli muscles).

The superficial branches are the great auricular nerve, lesser occipital nerve, transverse cervical, suprasternal, and supraclavicular nerves. The deep branches are the phrenic, communicantes cervicalis, communicating, and muscular.
