Branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO), a common disorder of the ocular vasculature, stems from the occlusion of a branch of the central retinal artery. BRAO represent 38% of all acute retinal artery obstructions. The resultant hypoperfusion of retinal tissue may result in vision loss.

2020年4月14日 · Retinal artery occlusion occurs when an artery in the retina is blocked, most commonly due to emboli. Occlusion of the central retinal artery (CRAO), a branch of the central retinal artery (BRAO), or the cilioretinal artery (CLRAO) may occur.

Use of the latest retinal imaging, spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) enabled correct diagnosis of BRAO. The images demonstrate and contrast the fine changes that can be seen in the acute and chronic phases of this condition and illustrate how the pathogenesis of BRAO is confined to the outer retinal layers.

We defined BRAO by the presence of regional inner retinal thinning with lack of inner-layer stratification on macular SD-OCT b-scan images that spatially corresponded with arteriolar distribution and visual field loss location. Primary open-angle glaucoma eyes were selected to match the BRAO eyes by age and disease severity.

Retinal artery occlusions can be categorized into branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO), hemiretinal artery occlusion (HRAO), central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) or cilioretinal artery occlusion (CLRAO). The underlying pathophysiology is usually secondary to blockage of the retinal artery from a retinal emboli.
