Broughton Castle is a moated and fortified manor house near Banbury in North Oxfordshire. Set in parkland and built of the rich local Hornton ironstone, it was selected by Simon Jenkins as one of only twenty to be awarded five stars in his book England’s Thousand Best Houses.

Broughton Castle Open Days 2025. Wednesdays, Sundays & Bank Holiday Mondays, 2 nd April to 28 th September 2025. Opening times 2pm to 5pm (access to the Tea Room possible from 1.30pm). We do not do online booking, just buy your tickets at the gatehouse (or show your membership card if a Historic Houses member).

In about 1300 Sir John de Broughton built his manor house in a sheltered site at the junction of three streams and surrounded it with a substantial moat. William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester and Chancellor of England bought the house in 1377.

The Castle was a meeting place of the leading Parliamentary opponents of Charles I including John Pym, John Hampden, Lord Brooke and Lord Saye’s son Nathaniel Fiennes.

Broughton Castle is 2.5 miles from the centre of Banbury, 3 miles from Junction 11 of the M40. At Banbury Cross take the B4035 west signposted to Shipston on Stour then, after about two miles, turn right in Broughton village at the crossroads by the Saye & Sele Arms pub.

When can I visit inside Broughton Castle? We are open 2pm – 5pm on Wednesdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays from 2 nd April to 28 th September 2025. The Tea Room and Gardens are open from 1.30pm to 5pm.

Groups are most welcome to book a private tour of the Castle at any time of the year but please ensure that your group are informed about the lack of heating so they can dress accordingly. It is often colder inside than it is outside!
