The bubal hartebeest, also known as northern hartebeest or bubal antelope or simply bubal (Alcelaphus buselaphus buselaphus) is the extinct nominal (i.e., first described) subspecies of hartebeest. It was formerly found north of the Saharan Desert .

It was protected in 1933 at the London Convention, but it was believed to have gone extinct 8 years earlier, in 1925. The bubal hartebeest was the first hartebeest subspecies to be named. It ranged throughout the region north of the Sahara Desert from Senegal in the west to Eritrea and Ethiopia in the east and down to central Tanzania.

The bubal hartebeest (Alcelaphus buscelaphus buscelaphus) became extinct in 1940 and in 1969 the Lake Nakuru hartebeest was lost to the continent. The Swayne's hartebeest was abundant in the early part of this century and is now considered the most vulnerable to extinction.
